Any animal can get lost. Having a chip under the skin significantly simplifies the process of finding the owner, provided the chip is registered in the Estonian register. In Estonia, chipping certain types of animals is already mandatory.
What is a chip and where is it inserted?
An animal identification chip is a compact capsule containing electronic information in the form of a digital code. Its total size, including the shell, does not exceed 12 mm. It is inserted into the withers area of the animal during a veterinary visit. After installing the chip, the veterinarian enters its data into the veterinary clinic’s database and records the number in the veterinary passport. To read the information from the microchip, a special scanner must be passed over the animal’s withers — the number will appear on the screen. The microchip itself is not a source of radiation and does not damage tissues. It is safe for animals.
A microchip is not a GPS navigator (satellite navigation system); it is impossible to track the location of a pet using it.
Who needs chipping?
Owners need to take timely care of identifying their own pet. In particular, a chip is necessary:
- for pets, because the pet can get lost, and the identifier speeds up finding the owner;
- when planning trips abroad;
- for exhibition animals — having a microchip is a mandatory requirement for participating in exhibitions;
- for purebred pets that may be substituted or stolen.
The chip will also help identify the owner of a lost pet if the microchip is registered to the owner in the register and serve as proof of ownership in case of animal substitution.

- speed — the procedure takes 5-7 minutes;

Animal chip registration
After inserting the chip, it must be registered — enter the animal’s information into the Estonian pet register Lemmikloomaregister (llr.ee). The pet register is available for searching information around the clock. It allows quick access to the owner’s data — full name, address, and phone number.
Microchip registration
The animal owner can independently register the chip in the Estonian pet register. An ID card and ID card reader are required for registration. If this is not possible, our clinic provides microchip registration service; the price is listed in the price list. The following data are needed for registration:
- individual microchip number;
- animal’s name;
- pet’s age — date of birth;
- breed;
- distinctive appearance features;
- owner’s full name;
- official Estonian residential address;
- owner’s phone number;
- email;
- owner’s personal identification code is required.
When registering a microchip through the clinic, the animal owner gives consent to the transfer of personal data to the Estonian pet register.
